HILDEGARD GOES 1-BIT
Spire’s End: Hildegard — 1 Bit Edition
A narrative adventure, rebuilt to play right on Playdate. Based on Spire’s End: Hildegard, this edition is not a straight port. While the story, tone, and structure remain intact, the gameplay has been redesigned to feel native to the hardware and the screen.
Playdate is a compact handheld gaming system with a 1-bit black-and-white screen and simple physical controls. There is no color, no touch screen, and no complex input combinations. Everything is designed to be clear, immediate, and focused.
Gameplay and Combat Mechanics
Bullseyes are still central to how actions resolve, but on Playdate you earn them by shooting and hitting moving marks, not by rolling dice. Each action gives you a limited number of shots as a marker bounces between walls, accelerating with every hit. You must fire and land your shot before it becomes too fast to control, locking in Bullseye parts built from the same half circles, pings, and rings used in the card game. Miss your mark and the marker speeds up, burning through your remaining shots and increasing the chance of a weaker result.
It is the same Bullseye system you know, delivered with a fast, hands-on twist designed specifically for Playdate.

New Frontiers
This project is an experiment, and a personal milestone. It is my first time building a game specifically for a handheld system, and the design is intentionally exploratory. Much of the inspiration comes from the era of the Neo Geo Pocket, especially its sharp, high-contrast aesthetics and confident simplicity. That influence shows up in the visuals, the pacing, and the focus on clear mechanics over excess presentation.
I have also had great help getting this project off the ground, and I look forward to properly introducing the Hildegard: 1-Bit Edition team in the near future.
Release Plans
Our goal is to release Spire’s End: Hildegard : 1-Bit Edition on the Playdate Catalog, but that is not guaranteed. When the game is finished, it will most likely be available first on itch.io. There is no release date yet. This is very much a case of when it’s done, it’s done.
I genuinely love this device. The moment I got a Playdate in my hands, I knew I wanted to bring my games to it. Playdate sits in a rare sweet spot between nostalgia, minimalism, and simplicity. It strips away noise and distraction while still feeling modern and intentional.
For what I have set out to do with Spire’s End and Hildegard, there could not be a better fit.
Hildegard: 1-Bit Edition is an independent project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or associated with Panic Inc. or the Playdate® platform. This project is currently in active development. Gameplay, visuals, features, and release plans are subject to change.
